yeah i got my gun, that's pretty good, even if it didn't come with ammo. bad timing though. with the shooting. bet no one wants to see another kid with a gun now.
and some pants, which is good as far as locker gifts go i guess?

yeah, i'll ask around. i've made it this far without, but it'd be nice.
in comparison melted ice cream isn't terrible either, but yeah i'm going to go with psychological warfare. why else could they think it's okay to put any parts of dead bodies, human or animal or otherwise, in people's lockers on a ship we already call the murdership, seriously.
Winds us up, I guess. Seen it spook a few people, and now and then it's creepier than usual. Wouldn't know which they to start blaming, though, to tell you the truth.
I think it's the ship's damage control. I think we've been brought here to save it. Just as ludicrous a thought as anything else but there you go. I got evidence to back it up.
when they said "damage control" i thought they meant they were going to do something to us.
it's a different angle. the ship trying to do good, when mostly everyone sees the ship as a bad thing with bad intentions. i guess from the ship's point of view we've been doing good. killing manticores. growing things in the oxygen garden. repairing stuff so we can try to live.
and none of us are from this time/place except the one person from jump 19 so we can't drag the ship back to a space station or something, the only thing we can do is try to make it good enough to live on which is... also helping the ship, of course.
what if this is going to sound crazy but i just thought of something what if the manticores are the previous passengers?
Seemed to me damage control was something they were afraid of. Our friend Smiley uses the same red font that the ship's emergency protocols were using in a message we intercepted from Captain Gallagher. That, and there's a few other things correlate when you start going down that line of thinking.
[ He's becoming more confident with it. Sooner or later, he'll come out and propose it to a wider audience, but for now just telling one person counts as confidence building. ]
It doesn't sound that crazy to me. We found out they had human DNA as part of their genetic makeup, but we couldn't decide whether they started out that way or it was a part of how they were made. Personally... Personally I think it came after they started experiencing problems with the jumps. Maybe they were trying to make it so people didn't have to go into the machines--those things survive outside of the grav couches, after all, otherwise they'd have all perished by now.
well then i want to hear the other evidence. if you don't mind sharing.
no chance smiley could be gallagher?
[ While he's making random connections, why not one more? ]
that's a logical and very creepy explanation for how the manticores ended up that way. i don't know. i'm going to look back through our archives and see if i can figure anything out about it with that as a possibility.
WHEREFORE ALSO I WILL DARE THAT CONTEST, MONSTROUS AS IT IS, THOUGH IT BE MY DOOM TO DIE. FOR NOTHING WILL FALL UPON MEN MORE DREAD THAN DIRE NECESSITY, WHICH INDEED CONSTRAINED ME TO COME HITHER AT A KING'S COMMAND.
[ Text is useful sometimes. ]
That was one of our early communications with him, a riddle to which we found the answer between us. But the thing that stuck with me was why that phrase? There's a wealth of things it could have said, a wealth of answers that could have unlocked that part of the list, but it chose that. Who is the King on a ship? The captain, of course. Then there's this.
Here you go; check out the red text. You can see what it's doing right there. I think that was Smiley's original purpose, but a lot of people on the ship were asleep when we got that message. There's something odd about that post too, time wise, but that's a whole different matter. It mentions people being in stasis, right? But we got THIS and THIS, which say five days before the jump there was no emergency and straight after Gallagher's flipped out; terrified of whatever's happening. It doesn't fit, right? That's not just me?
Alright, so what else do we have. Two questions: first of all, what is Smiley? I mean he didn't just come from nowhere, but you can't deny he has some hold on certain people on this ship, uses them. Second: why does it care so much about protecting us. It needs a damn good reason to do that, but it helped us find the science department, it saved all of us when the blue goo was making us sick. Why do that unless it needs us for some reason?
As for the manticores you might do well asking the people who took them apart. Some people around here still have...pieces of them. You could ask about that on the network.
No, someone or something that acted as damage control. I guess I'm not being that clear, it's just--Ward asked Resnik what she thought was going to happen when the ship's damage control caught up to them. I reckon Smiley fits the role well enough.
No, it doesn't sound crazy at all. I've been thinking along those lines too. There's something else involved in all this we haven't put our finger on, but... Smiley helps. For all his games, he's stood between us and death more than once, and it's not just a whim. He's guarding us and using us for a reason.
I agree. I mean. He's the program, we're the tools. He's clearly interested in us not getting ourselves killed, sees fit to fill us in on Ward and Resnik and whatever else, and there's gotta be some reason why, first of all, we aren't going anywhere with the technology to get us back, and more importantly, why we're here in the first place. What we've done since being put on this ship fits 'damage control' pretty closely, I'd say.
That's the ultimate mystery, I think. We spend a lot of time diverted from it, but finding out what T is...
Smiley draws our attention to it the same way it does Ward and Resnik. That means something. But yeah, going from it meaning something to an answer--that's the real challenge.
We've learned a lot more about all this than most people realize, but I haven't put it together comprehensively. We have the info guide, but it's bare-bones when it comes to this. I wonder how quickly Ward would kill me if I changed that.
